Creating a Sam Miller UK Portrait – Part 1

Hi Everyone, I thought I’d do a post about the way I create the portraits I am commissioned to do. Although each one is totally unique, the process I use to work on them is the same each time, and as I get asked a lot of questions about how I create them I thought it would be good to show you here from start to finish.

When I am asked to do a portrait for someone it can be of a single person, two people or a whole family. This can include pets as they are an importrant part of families for lots of you.

Before I start I ask for photographs of each character and if there is something particular you would like to be doing in the picture, and any special item’s you want me to add, this could be a special toy or certain clothes, they could be singing, dancing, anything!

This family asked to be in their favourite place which was the Botanical Gardens so I popped them all amongst the trees, which they loved. I don’t need a lot of information but it is easier for me to capture the character of each family if I know something about them, and most importantly, have a clear photo of each person.

Once I have the photos of everyone, I do a very rough sketch of the composition. None of the people have to be in the same photo, as I can define where I want each person to be, and what they are doing in the picture. As you can see from these sketches below, they really are basic and just to give me an idea of what i need to do for each person.

I then start to work on each individual character. I use an old-fashioned technique for this, I simply sit down with a pen and paper and draw! I work on each person separately as I find this a much easier way to get each person just right, and I can easily edit each one, and can move them about to fit the composition when I bring it all together at the end.

The amount of time I spend on each person can vary significantly, and there is no logical reason for this. I just find that I can draw some people in one go, and can capture everything I wanted to straight away. then other people for some unknown reason I struggle to draw! Sometimes I have to step away from them for a while as I can’t quite get them down on paper. However so far I have never failed to illustrate someone, so it might take a few sketches but I always get there and so far have had 100% happy clients!

Once I have each character ready, I scan them onto the computer and start putting them together into a composition, and add all the colours digitally. I will talk  about this in my next post but I just wanted to show a sketch with the original photographs, to show you how I add my own style whilst bringing the persons image to life.

I will talk about how I manipulate the digital processes I use on the images, to resize, add color and even change body-parts in Part 2.

Sam Miller GIVEAWAY!

I have a special GIVEAWAY for you. If you follow me on twitter @sammillerart I am doing a GIVEAWAY when I get to 1000 followers, the prize is a FREE Portrait of the winners family, so do follow me if you’d like to win, or if you would just like to get regular Sam Miller updates!

My Family!

All Sam Miller portraits are created from photographs, each character is hand-drawn and then put together with the others digitally to create a unique image for you. I love creating these, as each one is a new challenge and it’s great to pick out each person’s special qualities and try to capture their personality in the image. Great fun!

I’ll be showing how I create a portrait from the photo, to the sketches , then to the final image in my next blog post.

Summer Time

Hi Everyone, hope you are having a great summer. We have had an amzing one here in Scotland, loads of sunshine which has been crazy…in a good way!

It’s been amazing, but also a bit busy as the monkey has been off for the last 7 weeks, so work has had to go into second place, until today. She’s now back at school so the house is weirdly quiet, although I am worrying about her, how she is geting on with her new teacher, seeing all her friends and wearing a pink (not regulation blue) dress, but apart from that I’m totally relaxed and focused!

I’ve just added a new piece of commercial work to the site. It’s an image I’m really proud of, which is now being used by the Edinburgh Child Protection Committee for their annual conference in October. The circles are based on the colours and shapes on their logo which I thought would be good for highlighting the positives when children receive help. The grey circle is to show how awful, lonely and isolating it can be outside that. I’d love to know what you think.

I’m off now to complete another order of cards for Jenny Wren in Castle Douglas. They have stocked my cards for the last couple of years and they sell out regularly, so a big thankyou if you are one of the people in the area who keeps buying them.

Enjoy the rest of the Summer, and if you have any comments or would like to order anything just get in touch, I’d love to hear from you, thanks X

Happy Families!

I’ve been working on a lot of portraits in the last few weeks, these are one of my favourite things to do as they are always different. I always feel quite honoured to be creating images of the most important people in someone’s life, and try to make them look as special as possible, and capture as much personality as I can for each character.

Nicks_Family_changes

I always expect a few changes when I send them to people to check, as I like to make sure I am getting them right for them, as I am usually just working from a photograph and don’t know the person myself but want to make sure I capture their personality.

Sometimes I just get asked for the odd tweak, and sometimes I have a few big changes to make. The strangest one so far was putting lines under a babies eyes as he looked  cute and fresh-faced, but in real life often looks tired! It did make me smile but I am so pleased that people are keen to make my images as true to life as possible!

I’ve just finished another portrait, bit of a crazy rush as I got the order yesterday and they need it for a 20th anniversary tomorrow! I’m really pleased with it and have emailed the image but am not biting my nails waiting for a response, I always find the wait really nerve-wracking. Fortunately so far I have only ever got positive responses so fingers crossed for another one…

If you are interested in your own portrait do get in touch by emailing sam@sammiller.co.uk or ordering from this site, thanks XX

Plant ‘n’ Grow Products Launched!

I’m so pleased that Plant ‘n’ Grow have now launched their lovely products. They look amazing and I’m so pleased that my illustrations are part of it. they are used on their packaging, instructions and will be used with their marketing, including life-size gnomes which will be on show at Gardening scotland!

Vegalicious1

You can see my illustrations and the products here, and can buy the full range on Not on the High Street

It was a great project to work on and quite a change for me as it was mainly plant-based rather than characters so was a new challenge, but I really enjoyed it and hope to do more of this soon.

Mad March!

Hi Everyone,

This year is racing (or marching) along as fast as the last ones! There’s lots of exciting things going on here, I had a meeting yesterday to reveal all the images I’d done for Mandy Bailey Gardens and was thrilled that they loved everything! It’s still all a bit hush hush until the products are launched in April so I’m sorry I  can’t tell you much, or show you much yet but all will be revealed very soon and I hope it will be worth the wait for you.

Cornflowers

I did have a bit of rubbish news today, the art therpy group I lead has finally run out of funding so will stop at the end of the month. It’s a weekly group at a local psychiatric hospital and I’ve been there every Thursday for almost 15 years (I was almost a baby when I started!). I was initially employed for only 12 weeks I can’t really complain as they’ve kept me sooo long! It will be strange not going there though and I will miss it and the people and I think they will miss it too, but I do believe things happen for a reason  so again watch this space to see what happens next…

New Projects

Happy Valentine’s day Everyone! I’ve just finished working on a cute but very tacky image of my daughter with One Direction on a card to surprise her when she gets home. I’m now back to my own work…

I’m working on a few commissions at the moment so I thought I’d show you a rough sketch of the image I’m working on for the Story Warriors new book cover. The whole story is full of different worlds and adventures that the 4 children keep stepping into. I want to capture different moments, but somehow link they all together. It’s such a strong imaginative book, all the worlds are totally unique, and then the characters are totally realistic so this is what I aim to get across in the image. I really recommend this book and get quite excited working on it, I’ll let you see the finished thing asap.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year Everyone1 I’m really sorry it’s now February and I have just managed to say that to you, I hope you are having a good year so far.

I’m really enjoying 2014, and have realised it is the year I turned into my Mum!  have been completely reorganising and decluttering my house and sorting out my work so I feel totally refreshed, organised and ready for a good year.

As well as my usuual products I’m also working on some great new projects at the moment, I’m designing some packaging for a great company doing some exciting natural products for people. I’ll give you more details asap but I’ve put one of my sketches here as a sneak preview. It’s been a great new challenge working on plants instead of people, I’m really enjoying it.

chives

I’m also working on a book cover for Story warriors by Will Startle, it’s an amazingly imaginative adventure story for kids. I love it and it would have been a definite favourite when I was about 11, so if you have kids, or fancy a read yourself just take a look. (Exciting new cover by Sam Miller coming soon!)

Anyway hope 2014 is treating you well so far and I will bring you more news very soon. For regular updates do also look at my facebook page and twitter @sammillerart, Thanks X
